How to become a social worker in the UK, a guide for international candidates | HCL Workforce

By Robert Plummer Business reporter, BBC News image copyright Getty Images As the UK economy emerges from the effects of the pandemic, various sectors are reporting shortages of staff. The lockdown easing has prompted employers to start recruiting. UK job vacancies have hit their highest level since the start of the pandemic. Yet, puzzlingly, the latest employment figures show one-in-20 people who want a job can't find one. Hospitality, for example, is struggling to find staff, and there is a shortage of lorry drivers. Several other sectors face similar problems. Where have all the workers gone? In the words of Kate Nicholls, chief executive of trade body UKHospitality, the sector has "the wrong workers in the wrong place at the wrong time". image copyright PA Media image caption Staff in the hospitality industry often work long hours Students and apprentices, who often work part-time in hospitality, have had their studies disrupted by Covid and are not in their normal place of education.

Is Sheffield University saying that people people of faith are unfit to work as social workers? Since my early twenties I have been a qualified and registered social worker in England. Before ordination I worked in a variety of mental health settings, employed by local councils and Britain's National Health Service. Social Work has always been something that has animated me and has been such a significant part of my life. Today, I am a priest, but I still work as a social worker for several days each month. I belong to the British Association of Social Workers and am registered to practice with the Health and Care Professions Council, who regulate social work in England. When I was first ordained I continued to work in a Community Assessment and Treatment Team for 50 percent of my time and so I became a sort of worker priest, running a parish and supporting those with enduring mental health issues. I actually like the contrast and complementarity that this duality brings. I was saddened to hear this week that a student social worker at Sheffield University has been considered 'unfit to practice' because of his traditional views on marriage.

With the authority granted to us by the government, the HCPC has transferred the direct debit details we held for you to Social Work England. They will now use these details to draw down any future direct debit payments. The first payment they would be due to draw down is in April 2020. The good news is that you don't need to do anything. There is no need for you to complete a new direct debit instruction as details of this change will be supplied to your bank. They may notify you of this shortly. The only change you will notice is that from April, Social Work England will collect your direct debit payments for your professional registration. This should appear as 'SocialWorkEngland' on your bank statement. You may also see a comment on your bank statement advising you of the final payment under the HCPC. What if I need to change my direct debit details? Within a few weeks of the transfer, Social Work England will be in touch with you with details of how to create an online account. Social Work England will work with their direct debit provider GoCardless to manage all future payments and will email people to confirm the change over coming weeks.

Social workers make a difference to individuals and families by helping them live their lives more successfully. Working life As a social worker, you'll work with people to find solutions to their problems. You'll work with clients, their families and others around them and with different client groups including: the elderly children with disabilities teenagers with mental health problems young offenders adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems or physical disabilities people with alcohol, drug or other substance misuse problems refugees and asylum seekers families at risk of breaking down children who need to live apart from their families foster carers and adopters children who are at risk of abuse or neglect carers You may specialise in a particular client group. Their work can involve: visiting clients wherever they are (which could be at home or in, for example, a care home, hospital, hostel or prison) assessing clients' needs organising support making referrals to other services and agencies keeping detailed records attending meetings An important part of the work is building a professional relationship with the client so that you and the social worker and client can work together to make changes.

Other workers have moved away from big cities to save money during the pandemic. But, as the director of the Institute for Employment Studies, Tony Wilson, points out, the hospitality sector has trouble holding on to staff at the best of times. "This sector has a very high turnover, " he told the BBC. "Nearly half of people change jobs every year. A lot of firms have found people just move on to other things. " Kate Shoesmith, deputy chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), says there was a shortage of chefs even before the pandemic. But during lockdown, she says, many people sought out other kinds of work and are reluctant to return to the "quite brutal" culture of long hours and night work. "They've transferred to other sectors where they can work during the day, have proper breaks and more time with their family, " she says. Is this shortage of workers spreading? There are indications that the retail sector is also now feeling the pinch. In the early days of the pandemic, supermarkets and other essential stores were able to recruit workers who had previously been employed by restaurants and pubs.
