The 28-year-old has won 12 World Championship gold medals across three events and claimed five successive World Cup titles from 2012 to 2016 - a run that was ended in February by 21-year-old Russian Roman Repilov. Repilov is a two-time junior world champion and also won silver in the singles and sprint events at the World Championships in Iglis, Austria in January, with Loch failing to make the podium in both. Loch is back on top of the World Cup standings after four events this season, with another Russian - European champion Semen Pavlichenko - second as it stands. Without Repilov and Pavlichenko in Pyeongchang, it appears reigning world champion Wolfgang Kindl of Austria would be the most likely man to prevent Loch winning a third successive gold. Cross country - Sergey Ustigov Sergey Ustiugov wins a gold at the World Ski Championships 2017 One of the biggest talents in cross-country skiing, Sergey Ustiugov won two gold and three silver medals at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland in February.

In March 1892, the bodies of a woman and her four children were discovered buried under the concrete floor of Dinham Villa, Lawton Road, Rainhill. Fact|date=October 2007 The series of events that led to this gruesome discovery began with a marriage in St. Ann's Church, Rainhill. Miss Emily Mather married Frederick Bailey Deeming, an officer in the Army. The couple emigrated to Australia, where Deeming murdered his wife and buried her under the floor of their kitchen. Australian police contacted Scotland Yard and as a result of information passed onto them, made a search of Dinham Villa, home of Deeming's supposed sister and her four children. Marie Deeming, however, was his first wife. Her throat had been cut, as had the throats of three of the children. The fourth was strangled. Fact|date=October 2007 Deeming was convicted of the murder of Emily Mather and hanged in Australia. After being up for sale and attracting no interested buyers, Dinham Villa in Rainhill was demolished. Small bungaloes are now in place of it.

The UK as a whole is known for fairly unpredictable weather and a wet climate throughout the year but conditions can vary greatly from region to rthern Ireland, Wales and the western parts of England and Scotland have weather heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and they tend to be wetter, windier and milder than other areas. Eastern areas are drier and occasionally cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer, while they also experience greater variations in daily, and seasonal, temperatures. Northern areas are largely cooler than the south of the islands but they have slightly larger temperature ranges. There are a number of factors that can affect the different weather conditions in each region and this can lead to huge differences in temperatures, despite the relatively small size of the UK, and in the summer months there could be a difference of up to 20 °C between the south east of England and the far north of Scotland. Western regions are more susceptible to wet weather and sporadic rainfall but if you're well prepared this shouldn't be a major issue, and there will usually be somewhere interesting to take shelter!

It has been arbitrating disputes across many suburbs in the metropolis. The Taliban largely emerged in poor areas on the fringes of the city, run-down places with little or no infrastructure for health, education and civic amenities. Their mobile courts have been hearing complaints for quite some time, but in recent months they have also started administering punishments - a sign of their growing clout. In January, they publicly administered lashes to an alleged thief after recovering stolen goods from him. The goods were returned to the owner who had reported the theft. Suburban Taliban But the picture is complicated. There is a tussle under way between mafia groups (becoming more prolific and powerful in Karachi) who seek to seize land and militant groups who are also grabbing land. This includes the Taliban, for all their willingness to arbitrate in these disputes. It is clear that they want to tighten their grip in Pakistan's biggest city, its commercial centre. And they appear to have great influence in those suburbs dominated by the Pashtun ethnic group.
